Our Goals and Mission

All proceeds from this community event directly support research for Pediatric Brain Cancer as well as Student Activities and Athletics in the Huntington Beach area.  This Community 5k and Kids Fun Run will support very important causes:

MCKENNA-BUTTERFLY-V6-(1)The McKenna Claire Foundation:

Founded in 2011 by David and Kristine Wetzel.  The foundation is located in Huntington Beach California and is a 501(c)3 charitable partner of OneOC.

McKenna (Macky), a vivacious, seemingly healthy, 7-year-old from Huntington Beach was diagnosed with a rare, inoperable brain stem tumor called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). DIPG tumors, like many pediatric brain tumors, have very low survival rates. In July 2011, McKenna lost her battle with brain cancer just six months after her diagnosis.

Impact of Fundraising:

Funds raised by the McKenna Claire Foundation, are used to support pediatric brain cancer research.  The McKenna Claire Foundation has established a primary partnership with the Monje Lab at Stanford University supporting DIPG research, as well as entered into a partnership with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a leading funder of childhood cancer research.  Since the establishment of the McKenna Claire Foundation nearly $500,000 has been given to speed research and understanding of DIPG tumors and future treatments.
